When David Laws sat down for his first day at his new desk he saw three envelops left behind by Liam Byrne with a little covering note. Open one envelope, in order, in case of political disaster. David put them away but in time his first poltical disaster came along and so he opened the first letter. Inside was written “Blame the previous Government” and so he did and safely navigated his first problem.

Later on he faced another Political disaster and so remembered the good advice of his first letter and read the next. Inside it offered the advice, “Blame your civil servants.” and sure enough after following the advice he avoided having to leave his post.

a few years past of relative plain sailing until, in the run up to the 2015 election, David Laws made a massive error, panicking over the future of not only his job but also weather the party would be hammered at the next election he turned to the final letter. Inside was written, Start writing three letters.
